With an aging and diversifying population, affordable housing has become a growing priority in the Township of South Frontenac. For that reason, since 2017 the Township has been laying the groundwork for an initial affordable housing development for seniors and others in the village of Verona. Conducting market research on local housing needs is an important step towards making this vision a reality.

In order to further understand the specific housing needs of this community, the Township is asking those who may be in search of housing now or in the future, to complete our Housing Needs Assessment Survey. Responses to the survey should only take 6-8 minutes and will remain completely anonymous.

“The Township is anticipated to receive 80% of Frontenac County’s population growth over the next 25 years explained Mayor Ron Vandewal. “This amounts to a 25% increase locally, or an additional 5,000 residents in our community, not including our seasonal population. This growth has resulted in Council looking for innovative ways to help address the housing need, for both existing and incoming residents,” said Vandewal.

This Housing Needs Assessment Survey is an important early step in the development of a housing plan for the Township. In addition to the survey, there is currently a housing master plan for the village of Verona being developed. The Verona Housing Master Plan will establish a clear vision and detailed planning framework for recently acquired lands in downtown Verona to help set the stage for the development of new housing that meets the needs of current and future residents in that area.

“Through our 2019-2022 Strategic Plan, Council made a commitment to promote and support growth that meets the needs of the community while maintaining the integrity of our natural environment, and to ensure we contribute to the creation of vibrant, complete communities,” said Mayor Vandewal. “The livability of our villages and hamlets is paramount to South Frontenac’s growth and attractiveness for aging citizens, future residents, and the retention of young people. Council recognizes the housing challenges being faced by many current and prospective residents. By responding to this survey, residents will be helping shape what future affordable housing will look like and the sorts of needs it addresses in the community.”

About the 2019-2022 Strategic Plan:

As part of the Strategic Plan review in 2019, open houses and surveys were conducted to understand what residents wanted to see for the future of South Frontenac. Throughout the process many voiced their desire for more resources and infrastructure that allows residents to remain in South Frontenac as they age. As a result, Council designated housing as a priority and allocated funds to support this initiative through the development of a Master Plan for housing development in Verona, as well as acquiring a large piece of land within Verona that will be the site of a future housing development.
