Reflecting on this past weekend’s events in Portapique, Nova Scotia, we in South Frontenac are struck with sadness for our fellow Canadians whom are suffering an unimaginable loss at this time.
On April 22nd, 2020, the Township of South Frontenac shall fly the Canadian Flag at half-mast as a sign of support for Nova Scotia and an expression of our sincerest condolences to the friends and family of the 22 individuals who lost their lives during the mass shooting that occurred on April 18th and 19th, 2020. The Flag will be flown at half-mast for three (3) days at all municipal facilities with flagpoles.
Mayor Ron Vandewal addressed those suffering, “To the family, friends and co-workers of lost loved ones, we send our most heartfelt condolences. The town of Portapique, NS, is a small community that shares many similarities to South Frontenac and to see another rural community suffering from a horrific tragedy is absolutely devastating.”
The Mayor also wants to echo the gratitude being shown to the various first responders and RCMP officers who bravely answered the call of duty and took the necessary measures to protect Nova Scotia’s residents.
“I want the residents and municipal leaders in Nova Scotia to know that we in South Frontenac are thinking of you all with heavy hearts. Know that despite the distance between us, we stand together as Canadians during this crisis,” stated Vandewal.
