For Immediate Release                                                                                    March 30, 2020

Effective immediately, all playgrounds and park amenities in the Township are closed until further notice. This decision is based on recommendations from KFL&A Public Health and follows the Province’s announcement on Saturday, March 28 that groupings of more than five (5) persons are now generally prohibited in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The Township of South Frontenac declared a state of emergency on March 26, 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for local residents and visitors to adhere to Federal, Provincial and Municipal directives.

Playgrounds and park amenities encourage group gatherings of more than five (5) people and present the potential for common contact of various surfaces. As a result, surfaces in these spaces represent a risk of community transmission of COVID-19.

Amenities that are closed until further notice include:

  • Play structures, swings, slides and climbers
  • Sports fields and ball diamonds
  • Basketball, pickleball and tennis courts
  • Centennial Park’s Off-leash dog park
  • Beaches
  • Park washrooms and buildings
  • Benches, picnic tables and shade shelters

While playgrounds and park amenities are closed, residents can continue to walk through open park spaces and along trails, but must maintain physical distance from others – approximately 2 metres or 6 ft.

Safe park practices that are permitted include; running, walking or jogging while keeping a two-metre distance from others – which is equal to the length of a hockey stick. Residents can also walk their dogs through the parks and on trails where this is allowed, while respecting the established leashing requirements for the site.

Please continue to take precautions against the spread of COVID-19 by practicing these everyday steps to reduce exposure to the virus and protect your and others’ health:

  • wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • sneeze and cough into your sleeve
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • avoid contact with people who are sick
  • stay home if you are sick

Township Council and Staff will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation. With guidance from KFL&A Public Health, further updates about the Township’s service delivery, facilities, and health and safety measures are available through our website, social media platforms, and our banner in the Frontenac News and other media channels.
