Touch the Truck is returning to South Frontenac on Wednesday, May 8 from 4-7 pm at a new location, The Point Park in Sydenham.

The popular event, which gives kids of all ages the chance to get up close to big trucks and equipment had outgrown the previous space at the Township’s public services yard. South Frontenac Fire and Rescue, Public Services, Frontenac OPP, and Frontenac Paramedics are participating with boats, big trucks and equipment, motorcycles and ATVs as well as local community service organizations under the big tent.

The new location features ample parking at Loughborough Public School, Sydenham High School and the municipal offices and library parking lots. Accessible parking will be available at The Point Park. The parking lots are within walking distance of the park, but visitors can take a free shuttle bus running from the school parking lots to the event site.

Admission is free, but families are encouraged to bring cash for the BBQ fundraiser with proceeds going to Maltby Centre, a not-for-profit agency providing autism and mental health support for youth in Frontenac County and a non-perishable food item to help Stuff-the-Truck for the Southern Frontenac Community Services food bank.

The event takes place during Emergency Preparedness Week, May 5-11. This year’s theme is ‘Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.’ Emergency services personnel are encouraging residents to be prepared for emergencies, like sharing emergency contact information, building an emergency kit or grab and go bag, and knowing what to do when there are severe storms, weather, or wildfires.

“Touch the Truck is a wonderful opportunity to encourage kids to learn more and interact with our emergency and public services,” says Mayor Ron Vandewal, “It’s also a reminder for residents to review their emergency preparedness, check their supplies and plans, and learn more about the risks in our area and what steps they can take to protect themselves and their families in emergencies.”

The event will be a silent event with no horns or honking to make it accessible and enjoyable for all. Volunteers are still needed. For more information or to get involved, email recsupport@southfrontenac.net.
