South Frontenac Township Receives Sustainability Award for Battery Recycling Program
South Frontenac Township has been named by Call2Recycle Canada, Inc. as a 2023 Leader in Sustainability. The Leader in Sustainability Award is granted each year to organizations that display exceptional commitment to the environment and responsible battery management.
With the help of South Frontenac residents, the Township collected and diverted 2,310 kilograms of batteries from landfill in 2023, making it one of the program’s top-performing partners. The program increased collections by 32% in 2023 in Canada, diverting almost 6 million of kilograms of batteries from landfills.
“These are outstanding results,” says Kyle Bolton, Director of Public Services. “Batteries that are disposed of in landfills can leak toxic materials, contaminate the environment and affect wildlife. I’d like to thank the residents of South Frontenac for caring enough to do the right thing and recycling their batteries safely.”
The Township’s Household Hazardous Waste Depot is located at 2491 Keeley Road and is open from 3-7 pm on the second and fourth Thursday in the winter months and weekly on Thursdays from 3-8 pm the rest of the year. Residents can bring single-use and rechargeable dry-cell household batteries weighing up to 5 kg each to the depot for recycling.
In 2022, the Township launched the South Frontenac Recycles app to help make it easier for residents to remember collection days and to encourage recycling and the diversion of waste from landfills. The app features a handy Waste Wizard that allows people to look up what items can be recycled. Batteries were a common search item in the app.
“Each year, Canadians recycle more and more of their used batteries thanks to the ongoing partnership of organizations like South Frontenac Township who are setting high standards for waste diversion and environmental excellence,” says Joe Zenobio, President of Call2Recycle Canada, Inc.
