Open Farm Days
Municipalities across Frontenac County and the City of Kingston have declared Open Farm Days from August 16 to September 30. Six weeks of public events and experiences are scheduled beginning with an August 16 launch event at Frontenac Farmers Market. All are invited.
“Open Farm Days is an opportunity for the whole family to enjoy locally produced food, learn more about how it’s produced, and meet the people who bring it to our tables,” says Debbi Miller, Community Development Officer, Frontenac County. “Food producers, chefs, and community organizers collaborated to create these unique experiences. I hope everyone can attend.”
Activities include beekeeping, exploring flower fields, apple picking, Oktoberfest celebrations, culinary experiences that feature locally produced foods, and more. There are five farmers markets each week and the region plays host to three plowing matches: the Canadian Plowing Match, Wolfe Island Plowing Match, and Frontenac County Plowing Match.
Some Open Farm Days events require advance tickets while others are drop-in. There’s something for everyone and every budget. Visit OpenFarmDays.ca for detailed listings and to purchase tickets.
Members of the media are especially invited to an Open Farm Days launch event on Friday, August 16, at 4 pm at the Frontenac Farmers Market in Centennial Park in Harrowsmith. There will be speeches and an official ribbon cutting. The market is open from 3pm to 7pm.
Open Farm Days is also a collaboration among Frontenac County, South Frontenac Township, Tourism Kingston, and the City of Kingston.
